Dunham House Featured on National News
The story of Dunham House is gaining attention well beyond Omaha. The one-of-a-kind home for combat-wounded veterans was recently featured nationally on Fox News, highlighting its mission to provide specialized care, independence and a true sense of community for veterans who have sacrificed so much.
Building a Home for Our Nation’s Heroes: Dunham House
Lund-Ross is proud to be part of a project that goes far beyond constructing a building. Dunham House is creating a home, a community and a new model of long-term care for combat-wounded veterans.
Located in north Omaha, Dunham House is a first-of-its-kind residential community designed specifically for veterans living with traumatic brain injuries and other polytrauma conditions sustained during their military service. The facility will provide residents with the care and support they need while allowing them to maintain independence, build relationships with fellow veterans and enjoy a strong sense of community.
Rather than a traditional institutional setting, Dunham House was designed around the needs of the veterans who will call it home.
The approximately 27,500-square-foot facility includes assisted living-style one-bedroom apartments, along with specially designed studios for residents requiring additional assistance. Shared spaces include a great room, dining room, exercise room, lounge, community laundry and outdoor areas with walking trails. A memorial plaza at the front of the building will also provide a place for reflection and remembrance.
The goal is to give residents the right balance of personalized care and independence while surrounding them with other veterans who understand their experiences.
Dunham House is named in honor of Corporal Jason L. Dunham, USMC, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Iraq in 2004. During an enemy attack, Corporal Dunham covered a grenade with his helmet and body to protect his fellow Marines, ultimately sacrificing his own life.
His legacy of courage, service and sacrifice is at the heart of the Dunham House mission.
For the Lund-Ross team and our construction partners, working on Dunham House has been an opportunity to help create something that will have a lasting impact on veterans and their families.
Every part of the project has a purpose, from the private residential spaces to the areas designed to encourage veterans to gather, socialize and support one another.
As Dunham House prepares to welcome its first residents, we are honored to have played a role in bringing this vision to life and grateful to the many subcontractors, tradespeople, project partners and supporters who helped make it possible.
At Lund-Ross, we believe some projects are about more than the finished building. Dunham House is one of them. It is a place built to provide dignity, independence, camaraderie and a true sense of home to those who have sacrificed so much in service to our country.
